What is Photobiomodulation?

Photobiomodulation is otherwise known as light therapy.

Light therapy involves the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to deliver a specific wavelength of light that can be absorbed by cells in the body. The LED type determines the wavelength of light and can be tuned to a particular tissue or organ.

All living beings on planet Earth use ATP to survive. 

Photobiomodulation can be defined as the utilisation of non-ionising electromagnetic energy to trigger photochemical changes within cellular structures that are receptive to photons.

A photon is a particle of light defined as a discrete bundle (or quantum) of electromagnetic (or light) energy.

The cellular structures most receptive to photobiomodulation are within an organelle known as the mitochondria. Organelles are specialised structure that performs various jobs inside our cells. The term means “little organs.”

Our mitochondria are the cell's powerhouse and create the universal energy currency known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). 

What are the properties of Photobiomodulation?

The idea behind photobiomodulation is that cells can convert energy from light into chemical energy they use to repair their DNA, proteins and other essential molecules.

History of Light Therapy

Light therapy has been used for centuries for healing purposes. Hippocrates discovered that applying sunlight to the skin could relieve ailments such as rickets, scurvy and arthritis. However, until recently, scientists began understanding how this worked on a cellular level. 

The Different Terms within Photobiomodulation

More often than not, the therapeutic window is between 600nm-1200nm. 600-700nm constitutes visable red, and infrared is usually 700-1200nm.Infrared is made up of a longer wavelength and penetrates more deeply, whereas visible red is a shorter wavelength and a more superficial penetration.

Although infrared light belongs to one part of the electromagnetic spectrum, there are other existing technologies that come from other parts, such as WiFi, mobile data and even microwaves.

Infrared light is found around the center of the electromagnetic spectrum and infrared light has been shown to have a maximum depth of penetration in tissue.
