Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I see the lights inside my helmet?

We commonly get asked why only 4 lights are lighting up or why not all the LEDs are working and this is because our LEDs use a specific type of light in the near infrared range at 1070 nm which is invisible to the human eye. The other 4 visible lights are test lights that indicate the device is in fact working as it should.

Is this therapy FDA-approved?

Neuronic's devices are not classified as medical devices by the FDA. Red light therapy devices have been FDA-approved for a growing list of things including wound healing. The therapy has been proven to be safe and effective over and over again. Red light therapy is not yet approved for brain health – we are currently working with the FDA to submit the relevant research.

What is the difference between 810 and 1070 nm?

The differences between using 1070 nm and 810 nm wavelengths in photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy stem from their penetration depth, absorption characteristics, and specific biological effects. Both wavelengths fall within the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, which is known for its therapeutic effects on tissue healing, inflammation reduction, and neuroprotection, among other benefits. However, the distinct properties of these wavelengths contribute to their unique applications and effectiveness:

Penetration Depth:

1070 nm: This wavelength can penetrate deeper into biological tissues compared to 810 nm. The higher wavelength of 1070 nm results in lower scattering in tissue, allowing the light to reach deeper areas. This characteristic is particularly advantageous for targeting deeper-seated tissues or for applications requiring greater penetration depth, such as treatments aimed at reaching deeper parts of the brain.

810 nm: While it also penetrates well and is effective for a range of therapeutic applications, 810 nm generally has a slightly lesser penetration depth than 1070 nm. However, it is still highly effective for many applications, including brain health, due to its strong absorption by cytochrome c oxidase (CCO), promoting cellular energy production and tissue repair.

Biological Effects and Applications:

1070 nm: Given its deeper penetration, 1070 nm is beneficial for conditions requiring the stimulation of tissues located deeper within the body, including deeper brain structures. This makes it potentially more suitable for certain neurological applications where reaching deeper brain areas is necessary.

810 nm: This wavelength is extensively studied and widely used for a variety of PBM applications, including wound healing, reducing inflammation, pain management, and neurostimulation. Its effectiveness in promoting ATP production makes it particularly useful for enhancing cellular function and recovery

Why do we use the 1070 nm?

The choice of the 1070 nm wavelength for photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, including applications like those developed by Neuronic for brain health and function, is grounded in scientific research and practical application considerations. Here are several reasons why this specific wavelength is used:

1. Deep Penetration: Near-infrared (NIR) light in the range of 800 nm to 1100 nm is known for its ability to penetrate deeper into biological tissues compared to visible light or other wavelengths of infrared light. The 1070 nm wavelength falls within this NIR spectrum, allowing it to reach deeper brain tissues, which is crucial for treating conditions related to the brain or the central nervous system.

2. Optimal Absorption by Cytochrome c Oxidase: One of the primary mechanisms of action for PBM is the absorption of NIR light by cytochrome c oxidase (CCO), a key enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain responsible for cellular energy production (ATP). The absorption peaks for CCO are in the NIR region, and while the most commonly cited peaks are around 810 nm, 830 nm, and 904 nm, research suggests that wavelengths throughout the NIR spectrum can be beneficial. The effectiveness of a specific wavelength, like 1070 nm, can depend on various factors including the target tissue depth and the specific application.

What is Brain Entrainment?

Brain entrainment, also known as brainwave entrainment or neural entrainment, refers to the practice of stimulating the brain into entering a specific state using pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic fields. The goal of brain entrainment is to induce synchronized brainwave frequencies, with the intention of influencing brain states to achieve various outcomes such as enhanced relaxation, improved focus, deeper meditation, improved sleep quality, and increased cognitive performance. The underlying mechanism is based on the brain's natural tendency to synchronize its brainwave frequencies with the rhythm of external stimuli, a phenomenon known as the Frequency Following Response (FFR). For example, if a stimulus in the form of a repetitive sound at a frequency of 10 Hz, which corresponds to the alpha state of brain activity associated with relaxation and calmness, is presented to a person, the brain is likely to align its brainwave activity to this frequency, thereby promoting a more relaxed state.

What is Light Therapy, or transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM)

Light therapy, also known as Photobiomodulation, applies low-level light-emitting diodes (LED) to the surface of the body. It is claimed that the application of low-level light-emitting diodes relieves pain or stimulates and enhances cell function. This light therapy is primarily used in the near-infrared (NIR) and red light spectrum, which are wavelengths that penetrate the skin and underlying tissues without causing damage. The mechanism of action for PBM involves the absorption of light by mitochondrial chromophores, particularly cytochrome c oxidase, which is part of the electron transport chain in mitochondria. The absorption of light energy leads to an increase in mitochondrial metabolism, resulting in enhanced cellular energy production (ATP), reduced oxidative stress, and the release of growth factors and anti-inflammatory mediators. These effects collectively contribute to tissue repair, pain reduction, inflammation reduction, and neuroprotection.

Why do I need a qEEG for consultation?

The qEEG or brain map acts as a guide to develop protocols based to your unique brain. It enables clinicians to see what areas are over or under stimulated and thus change the light pulse in different regions to increase coherence.

Is having a qEEG required before having consultation?

We typically suggest that you have your qEEG reading before the first consultation to get the most from it but it’s not mandatory as clinicians can first guide you through setting up the device and understanding the biphasic dose response curve.

Where should I send my qEEG Scan?

All qEEG readings should be sent to consultation@neuronic.online with your full name and reference to who may have purchased the device or consultation on your behalf to ensure we can match the client.

What is a qEEG Brain map?

A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) brain map is a sophisticated analysis and presentation of the electrical activity of the brain, recorded from multiple sites on the scalp. The qEEG process involves measuring the electrical patterns at the surface of the scalp which reflect cortical activity, and it's commonly known as "brainwaves." The qEEG brain map translates these brainwaves into a visual representation that shows different brain wave patterns and activities in various regions of the brain. Here are key aspects of qEEG brain mapping:

1. Data Collection: The qEEG begins with the collection of EEG data, which involves placing electrodes on the scalp. These electrodes pick up the electrical signals produced by the neurons in the brain. The data collected includes various brain wave frequencies such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma waves, each associated with different states of consciousness and cognitive processes.

2. Quantitative Analysis: The raw EEG data are then processed and analyzed quantitatively. This involves comparing the individual's EEG data to a normative database that contains EEG patterns from a large group of healthy individuals. The analysis looks for deviations from the norm, which can indicate areas of the brain that may be functioning suboptimally.

3. Brain Mapping: The analyzed data are then presented in the form of a brain map, which is a color-coded map showing different aspects of brain activity. These maps can display various parameters, such as brain wave amplitudes, coherence (how different parts of the brain communicate with each other), and phase delays (timing differences between brain areas). Colors on the map typically indicate areas of overactivity, underactivity, or dysregulation in the brain.

4. Applications: qEEG brain mapping is used for a variety of purposes, including diagnostic assessment, guiding neurofeedback therapy, monitoring the effects of treatment, and research into brain function. It can help identify patterns associated with conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurological and psychiatric disorders.

5. Benefits: The qEEG brain map provides a non-invasive, objective, and detailed view of brain function. It offers valuable insights that can help clinicians develop more targeted and effective treatment plans. For instance, neurofeedback therapy often relies on qEEG findings to tailor interventions that can help normalize brain wave patterns. In summary, a qEEG brain map is a powerful tool in the field of neurology and mental health, offering a detailed and quantitative analysis of brain activity. It provides a visual representation of the electrical patterns in the brain, helping clinicians and researchers understand brain function and guide interventions for various cognitive and psychological conditions.
